Mental Health Awareness Week (10th – 16th May 2021) is organised by the Mental Health Foundation, to provide an opportunity for people to speak about different aspects of mental health, focusing on helping those who need it. They want to reduce the stigma attached to Mental Health issues and encourage those struggling to speak out. Promoting good mental health is at the heart of what they do.

Monday 10th May marks the launch of 2021’s Mental Health Awareness Week (MHAW)! The pandemic has highlighted that providing support and guidance for those struggling with their mental health should be fundamental and available to all. Here at Monex, mental health is and will always be of huge importance to us.

From our ongoing support for employees to involvement with mental health charity “Happy Space”, raising awareness and reducing stigma around mental health is a journey we are proud to be a part of.

We want to use this week as an opportunity to speak about how important mental health support is to us as a business.

How are Monex supporting the cause for better mental health?

The theme for this year’s Mental Health Awareness Week is ‘nature’. The evidence is clear that access to nature is crucial for our mental health, and millions of people re-discovered that during lockdowns this year. From forests and oceans to our very own gardens or view from our window – nature is everywhere!

Across the country, people will be celebrating the mental health benefits of being around nature in a range of different ways, and Monex are no exception…

To get involved in this year’s nature theme, Monex is hosting an internal nature photography competition, to get everyone looking outside and spending time with the nature surrounding us.

We have some keen photographers in the company, so keep your eyes peeled as we will be sharing some of the shots from our employees on our social media accounts. 1st, 2nd and 3rd place will be announced on the 16th May!

Nature is the creation of pure love.  It feeds and nurtures us, delights our senses, and soothes our troubled minds. Like a great Mother, it has earned our respect and loyalty.

Soaking up wildlife through the lens is a truly brilliant way to connect ourselves more with nature. We hope that this incentive encourages more of the Monex team to get out and explore the nature surrounding all of us.

Our Fitness Expert and Life Coach Tarik Elmetaal has worked alongside Monex employees for over a decade, focusing on fitness, mental health and wellbeing.

Through Tarik’s experience prior to Monex, he has helped many people from athletes, doctors, and CEOs, to special needs groups, cancer patients, and many other individuals from all walks of life.

Support from Tarik has been crucial since the start of the first lockdown with employees working from home, and he has been a vital part of Monex and ensuring support is there for both mental and physical help when needed.

Monex produces a quarterly internal health and wellness magazine to help Monex employees by providing inspirational articles, healthy recipes, self-care podcasts, and other physical and mental health advice.

The latest edition centred around preparing for a “new world”, and how we can take care of our mental and physical wellbeing during this transition period and focus on better days that lie ahead.

In December 2020, Monex supported the “Happy Space for All” campaign, created by preventative mental wellbeing charity “Happy Space”. The charity produces guidebooks and lesson plans to introduce mental wellbeing into the school curriculum, as part of their aim to help protect the minds of a future generation.

Monex donated £5000 to the charity. This donation alone provided approximately 2000 children with wellbeing books filled with tips and tools so they can learn to look after their mental health during the difficult times faced during the pandemic.

Mental Health Awareness Week is great way to raise awareness, but mental health should be taken seriously every single day, by every single one of us. We are all on a journey to creating a world where people understand, protect, and sustain their mental health.

The pandemic has been a difficult time for so many of us; now is the time to show we truly care. Returning to our ‘normal’ lives won’t be an easy path. But by supporting each other and our employees, we can make the new world, a better world.
